New guy here, from Watertown. Just picked up a silver 2004 GT 5-speed with 30K miles a couple weeks ago. No pics ready just yet though, because (surprise, surprise) it's already in the shop.
This is my 2nd 'stang. From 2002 to 2004 I owned a '95 GT that had a number of mid-level mods, but the '04 is completely stock. Hopefully that'll change soon.
So...is there anybody here who doesn't live west of 128?!

Now they're saying they think it's a loose baffle inside one of the catalytic converters. I'm not sure sure I believe them, though.
Actually, I don't think they even know for certain just what the problem is. I'm pretty sure that, like me, they think noise is coming from inside the clutch, but that they're just not 100% sure.
Replacing the cats (read: longshot to eliminate the noise) doesn't cost them anything; Ford Motor Co pays the bill, because the exhaust system is still covered by the factory warrantee. The clutch isn't; if Watertown Ford replaces the clutch (which is what at least one service technician advised), and the car still makes the noise, then the dealer would have to eat the $1,200 it took to do the procedure. At the very least, they'll have to give a huge discount when they finally make the correct repairs.
Either way, this won't cost me much, because the state-imposed warrantee period from when I bought it still hasn't expired, and the seller (a VW dealership) is picking up the tab. My concern is this: unless Watertown Ford makes a diagnosis that conclusively points to the clutch, this little noise isn't legally the VW dealership's responsibility, because technically, it doesn't impaire the operation of the car. So, if the clutch goes completely 2,000 miles from now, I'll have to pay for the repairs out of pocket then, even though any reasonable person would know it was because of a problem that was overlooked now.
Just kinda venting, I guess...tired of being jerked around. We'll see what happens.

Welcome .... Did you try pushing in the clutch and reving the engine in the rpm range that you hear the noise . If it goes away ..then it's the throw out bearing . Good luck with it !!

Thanks for the suggestion. Actually, I had already tried every possible combination (clutch in and out, in all gears, in neutral, car moving or sitting stationary), and there was no pattern I could identify. Seemed to do it almost every time. That's what's making me lean towards the pilot bearing instead.
I guess I wouldn't mind too much if it turns out to actually be the catalytic converter--at least I'd be less likely to have a problematic clutch over the next few years--but knowing my luck, the clutch'll sh#t the bed as soon as the state-imposed warrantee expires. I dunno, I guess I just kinda always expect the worst.

On another note, though: can some of you guys explain to me what the deal is with the events section of the forum? As the new guy, it's kinda hard to tell exactly who's invited to which meets...can't really tell which ones are open to all, and which are open only to long-time site members.
