plan is stock bore, stock pistons, gt40p heads, gt40 intake , tb, maf, 1.7rr stock cam, block hot tanked , new cam bearings, micropolished crank. shorty equal length or gtp headers if i can find some, and x pipe.
yesss!!! i dooo!! do u have tb too? pm me pics or info. and yes this will be my first rebuild. if you got any tips or anything or good link that would make it go real smooth i be glad to get all the knowledge i can so everything wll go smooth as butter. do i use stock head gaskets for gt40p head or explorer headgaskets is wat im wondering. also if anyone has gtp headers for sale ill take them asap
I have the intake with the stock tb 65mm on it, I will grab it today after work and take a pic. I,m looking for $100 for both. Ford has a performance gaskets set that is better than stock at a fair price. Or any mls(multi-layer steel) are a great gasket but a little more pricey. On my first build I followed step by step with the manual and everything worked out great. Just take your time and double check every torque spec twice. If you have any questions pm me- joe
for driveability, and i dont wana change the springs right now i dnt wana touch the heads yet. when i want mmore power im gona get the heads ported and vavle job and do cam and springs, or just put a blower on it, but i gota alot other work i gota do first lol
i wanted to use clevlite beearing but i was having a hard time finding them. i read the summit kits are the same thing ford uses. in a way i wish i peiced togthere my own kit . as far as gaskets go i was wondering if i used ones for e7 heads, or ones for a 98 explorer or are they both the same.
o yea i spent 2 hours today cleanig the carbon out of the piston ring grooves, im gona try and check the rings gap and bearing clearance tomorow ,if everything checks out gona start assembling next week.
nice man your makin moves, but i agree just throw an e, b or trickflow stage 1 cam in that car, you wont have any driveability issues. My blue lx i just sold had a b cam and some other bolt ons and i drove it everyday for 4 months to newport r.i. for work (hr and 10 min eachway) and the car ran great.....so pretty much spend the 150$ extra and put a cam in it while your already there....plus it sounds way better
If those are the stock explorer springs on those GT40P's i see, then you'll need springs either way. The exploder springs will bearly handle a stock cam. At least swap on some E7 springs if you have them.
Some of your choices are stock cam + 1.7 rr's, or a TFS or aftermarket cam and 1.6's (1.7's if you get good springs good to around .540 lift)
The stock cam is plenty capable and i've seen plenty of guys in the 12's with 40P's and a stock cam + 1.7 rr's.
I'm actually debating a TFS1+ 1.6's vs stock cam + 1.7'S for my own 40P combo. The reason I like the stock cam is drivability, as i've seen the TFS have some idle lope and hunting in some setups. I'm still undecided.
But either way, you should consider springs. The cost is cheap compared to floating a valve into a piston at high RPM

i got the same heads with stock cam and 1.7 rr's trapped 105mph in the 1/4 mile spinning tire
plenty of power with the stock cam
hahahahh 15s yes i have 2 complete pairs e7s heads so getting those wouldnt be a problem. but the gtp springs are brand new, so they mite be beter. anyone know the lift rated on them, 93 lx still has the gtp springs
was about to start assembly today but forgot assembly lube. but i stillgot a good amount of work done. got the timing cover prettyy clean jus some cracks got a lil gunk in them still. primed/painted oil pan
trying to decide if i should paint or not
got a explorer intake and tb thanks to mcnally 351
cleaned it a lil today looks like it will come out nice wen done
got a few qestion. wat do i have to do'/swap over to make the explorer intake work. do i need to swap over the heater core tube, and thermistat housing from my stock intake. i took the smog pump out i am kinda confused about wat to do about the throttle body and egr. can i jus bolt the explorer throttle body to the manifold? everything i read seems to give different answers, and does anyone have a link for the sensor tapping. also wen you guys are wipping down the mains ect getting clean to put the bearings in wat do you use. everything seems to leave lint or materal on the block ect . i am trying to start assembling the short block tomorow. thanks

Hey Johnny, You can block off the egr completely just fab up a block off plate. as for cleaning the mains use a micro fiber cloth not a red shop rag. Clean up that intake and get some paint on it and you'll be all set. keep working buddy :)
u mean block off the internal port? also do i need to tapp a spot for the boss sensor. everythread i read someone says something different its confusing lol . also do i use stock headgaskets for gtp heads. hopeing to get the pistons in tomorow. thanks again joe
Yeah, some guys tap the #5 intake runner for the act sensor. You might need to modify the linkage bracket also. There is some posts on stangnet forum with good info. I didn't realize they needed this much work, I never ran it. But your not the first and it can be done.
does any one know wat sensors i need tapped in the lower. and if i need a spacer between the intake manifold and throttle body/ thanks. im trying to get the lower painted and get the sensors tapped.

this truck has a 98 explorer motor in it with p heads and same intake as the one you are running all i did on the intake was exactly what u did to ur intake i just took off the explorer elbow and put on a mustang throttle body

That's a exploer 65 mm throttle body. I beivie I am goin to have to cut my throttle linkage off and put it on the explorer one some way. I think I got the lower figured out, can I jus switch the heater core tubes.. still need 1.7rr and I kinda wana do springs now lol. I may jus get a fox body tb if I can find one for cheap.

come on if your gonna post a vid of that truck atleast make it a better one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhGq2CvVdnI&feature=related
first compression ring gaped at .029 second one at .018 ,alldata says between .010-.020 is in spec and my haynes book says anything under .040 is fine. wil theese be acaptable? i am about to messure oil cleanarnce now. the ring gap kinda has me worried
My buddie Remmy has a 90 notch with h/c and and explorer intake and he didnt drill and tap the lower intake on the # 5 runner for the temp sensor and it deff hurts performance.
You figure a 5spd notch with h/c/i and other bolt ons should be able to get 3 gears down the road (if you can drive).....his car will do 1 and a half, it runs like a bag of smashed assholes w/o putting that sensor in it.
So get a temp sensor off your stock intake and make moves. I'd hate to see you put all this time into your ride have have the performance suck.... thats just my imput.
yea im tapping the temp sensor, people say u get better prefomance putting it in the intake but im gona tap to it the intake where the stock one goes. and the heater core lines i can jus switch the ones from my fox to that intake right/
right now i have ben stuck on pistonring gap. before i didnt have them, far enuf down in the cylinder, but im getting .018 top ring, and .014 botton ring if i rember correctly im gona double check wen i get home. and i know the botton rings gap is soposed to be bigger than the top . my teachers saying it will be fine but everything i read says the botton gap sshould be bigger, so im kinda just stuck on wat to do. its holden me up, im kinda reluctant to file them. any one know if those gaps will be fine
i did the explorer intake on my florida vert. i came out well. i also used the explorer 19 injectors instead of the mustang ones. better atomization. 4 holes v.s. 1 spray hole. i think the iat sensor was just sae pipe thread. i don't remember the size. car made good power with mild cam, edelbrock performer heads and expl. intake. pics in my garage with cobra here.
well i gaped my rings for boost, ben kinda busy and i dnt have the internet at home, so its kinda hard to post. but the shortblock should be assembled by the end of next week.i think i decided im gona do springs. now i gota decide if i wana do a cam or RR. can u use stock e7 rockers on gt40ps or they have to be off a explorer
i cleaned the lower good , i stil gota get the sensors taped for it them im gona paint it. i think im getting a pair for gt40p headers today. would comp cam 986-16 vavles spring work ok with stock cam and 1.7rr or is it to much
Those headers I gave you wont clean up? I do not think that will be a problem but if you are going with the stock grind you might as well go with the 1.6rr.
You just have to find some stuff to sell or work on the weekend for some cash and buy a cam and valve train that all work together with the heads- Joe
