i need some help building a 347 with a pro charger


I have a car set up for the strip it is a 95. i am rebuilding the motor from my 86 it is a 347 stroker. the motor is a work in progress right now. i don't know much about motors other then i like when they have a lot of power. i need help picking and deciding on a few things for it. The 347 was built in 1999 and has probably 6000-8000 miles on it. i was going to just put it in this car and run it. but now that it is apart and i have the procharger for it i think i need to change a few things to make it better and safer to run with the charger. tell me what you think. here is a list of what it was.

93 cobra block
the block is o ringed
head stud kit
main cap girdle
28 oz imbalance
cast scat crank part # 93023
forged i beam rods 5.400
comp cams adv. der. 274/282 der. 6.050 224/232 .555/.565 lobe sep angle 112
keith black Hypereutectic flat top pistons 4.030
Windsor senior heads stage 3 port and i think they are 64cc i should know by tomorrow
head gasket .047" thickness i was told this combo made it 10.5 to 1 compression?
ported cobra intake

but now i will be adding a p-1c Procharger kit with intercooler, i need to know if there is some internals i need to change, what injectors to get, should i lower compression? should i run the meth kit?

the pistons crank an block are your weak point,i would get a whole new forged rotating assembly and h beam rods but with a 347 and a blower =over 500 hp without even trying so the blocks on borrowed time so its a catch 22

I agree, the block will not last over 500HP. You may have fun with it for a little while, but it will break eventually. Spend the extra money and buy a BOSS block.

ok then i might just get it on the road with no charger this year.

i thought it might be safe because i have a 5 pound pulley for a 302. and i have been told it will be less boost on a 347. the kid i bought it from had it on a 331 and it was just under 4 pounds. they say the more displacement the less boost with same pulley. have you found that to be true?

i planed on doing Methanol injection with a inline presser switch hooked up to a light so i know i have the meth at all times. i was also going to go to the dyno and get the car tuned and drop power if it is making to much power for a stock block. i wanted a reliable set up. but if there is not a way to do it then i guess i will have to wait on the blower. some say i might be safe doing what i planed to do but if it is going to blow i don't want to do it.

just throw it in without the blower for now and see how it does, a 347 with those heads with work done will make some steam

I agree with everyone's reply. If it were me I would drop in the 347 and hit it with a 125 shot wet kit and an MSD digital 6 ignition . This should make just over 500 horse on the sauce and close to 600 ftpounds of torque .Motor should be fine with the pistons , crank, and rods you have ... just don't go anymore and always use 93 octane or more . Maybe even throw in some octane boost for good measure or some race gas for saftey . This would make an excellent street weapon !!

You could save the procharger for another engine or sell it to fund other stuff . Like a better intake . The cobra is holding some back . Also like I said before if you care about your engine you won't use the Meth . You have to tune for it which means if the shit don't spray for what ever reason just once the engine will get hurt .

Also I see were your trying to go with the high compression and low boost . It's been done before , but this is for race only setups not street driven cars and will require C16 race gas all the time . Plus your block and rotating assembly will not be happy with that kind of set up .

well i have the wet kit and i have the msd aready its a 6al. so i'll just throw that in there. is there any thing i could change on the 347 now that it is out and half apart (under $1500) or put in in as is and run it. thanks agin

Not an ideal piston I agree ... but don't use any power adder ? Factory mustangs use hypereutectic pistons and people throw boost or nitrous at them with good results . You just can't get to greedy . LOL !!

i was quoted $200 to instal new pistons and balance it again, that sounds cheap to me. what would you put in for pistons to run 5-8 pounds safe. i don't need to be the fastest i just want it safe.

347 10.5 to 1 with hyper pistons? and you want boost or spray? you'll break the top ring lands off first time out. if you have the money. take out the crank rods and girdle get a dart block and put it back together with some fordged pistons and with cometics then spray or boost it. boost will require race gas with that compression. and spray will need race gas too. or run pump gas and do a stand alone fuel system. you CANT go with a boss block with a 347 because the pistons on the down stroke will bottom out in the block and sound like a rod rap, a 331 is the biggiest stroke you can do. good luck with your build.

you could do a cheaper forged for 450.00 or so about 300.0 to balance +-. then you have rings a hone and what ever else is needed in parts brgs gaskets etc

I respect everyones opinion but, I say let him play with what he has . It just doesn,t seem right to rip apart a perfectly good engine . If you set the motor up right for juice it will be fine . 10.5 comp is to much for a forced induction set up . However it is good for nitrous . A 100 shot is not going to kill it as long as it is set up right . I don't know how many horror stories I have heard about nitrous . Most likley do to someones incompetance . IF you run a slightly colder plug , use a good ignition that can automaticaly retard the timing when in use , and your fuel sytem is up to the task . Also a hobs switch , so in the event you loose fuel pressure the nitrous will shut off . Oh and a window switch would be ideal incase you miss shift you won't be on the rev limiter and nitrous . IT WILL BE FINE !!!!!!

Run what you have If it breaks which it won't ...then build somtheing else .

This is for john @A1 RACING regarding the Boss Block 347 ci. I was going to purchase a Boss 302 Block. Ford Motorsports has the 347 boss blocks, shortblocks and longblocks, that are 8.2" deck heights. Doesn't a 331 usually use a 3.125 stroke crank w/ a 5.4 rod?/ The blocks are nothched due to the extra travel and time the piston stays in the bore. I think the Boss Blocks are notched the same as a Dart at the bottom of the bores so the rod doesn't hit, never heard of pistons hitting anything?? Ford does make a Boss 5.0 block with a 4.6 deckheight i believe is that what you were thinking or am i totally wrong here?? I'm in the market for a Block so i wanna know if i should go with a Dart??

331 is a 3.250 crank with a 5.4 rod. The entry level dart and boss block are both in the same league. yes a block has to be notched at the bottom for rod clearance .

Woops i ment 3.250. I just bought a 347 rotating assembly for my project and i'm gonna go with a Boss Block. Wish i could put a s/c on it!! I think i'll be happy with the power n/a thoughaww.gif Good luck wadman
